O projeto será analisado pelas comissões de Defesa dos Direitos da Mulher; de Segurança Pública e Combate ao Crime Organizado; e de Constituição e Justiça e de Cidadania.

Conforme a proposta, apresentada pelo deputado Alexandre Frota (PSDB-SP), cidadãos acusados de crimes da lei Maria da Penha ficam proibidos de conseguir a aquisição e, no caso do acusado já possuir o porte ou a posse, a arma ficará apreendida até o final do processo e só será devolvida em caso de absolvição. A Polícia Federal e o Exército deverão ser notificados pelas Secretarias de Segurança dos respectivos estados sobre a instauração do Inquérito Policial.

Para o autor do projeto de Lei, Frota, as armas são uma maneira de os agressores intimidar as vítimas. Nos dizeres do Deputado,

Na Lei atual já é prevista a obrigatoriedade da autoridade policial de fazer constar no boletim de ocorrência se o agressor possui porte ou posse de arma de fogo, bem como juntar a informação aos autos do processo e notificar a ocorrência à instituição responsável pela concessão do registro ou da emissão do porte. Além disso, o magistrado pode determinar como medida protetiva a apreensão imediata da arma de fogo sob a posse do agressor.
